Festival Fringe Events │Scarborough Jazz Festival 2019


Alan Barnes stars in two very different pre-festival events at the Cask – one at Scarborough Jazz and the other a one-off with the old Blues Club band.  

The Penguin Guide to Jazz comments on Alan’s versatility: ‘He can handle any swing-to-bop style, and virtually any member of the saxophone family with the same facility.’’

Two fabulous saxophonists kick off the festival. 

Award winning reeds player Alan Barnes joins up with Jim Corry, one of the very best saxophonists around, and a popular regular at Scarborough Jazz. 

This is bound to be a very busy night so get your tickets early from the Cask or Record Revivals

Alan is joined by The Tom Townsend Blues Band for a line up that proved both popular and magical when they last appeared a few years ago. 

Expect a night of great blues with a tinge of jazz, presented with the bonhomie we love. No tickets - first come, first served.

The Eastern Area Schools Youth Jazz Orchestra

The orchestra’s morning and afternoon performance have become popular features of the festival. 
The tutors this year are saxophonist Robert Fowler and drummer Matt Skelton. Why not come along and have a drink or some food whilst you listen to these talented young people?

Mister Tooley’s Gospel Brunch

The inimitable Scarborough based DJ and record shop owner, Mister Tooley, plays a righteous mix of hand clapping, foot-stomping gospel recordings on original vinyl. 
These rare and unique recordings range from raw spirituals and the exciting harmonies of the jubilee groups to the sanctified soul of The Caravans and Sister Rosetta Tharpe.

The Stephen Joseph Theatre’s Funky Choir

The SJT Funky Choir bring their own brand of disco, pop, rock and soul music to Scarborough Jazz Festival. 
Each year, Musical Director Mark Gordon uses the festival as an excuse to doff the choir’s hat to Jazz and add a new jazzy tune to the repertoire.  The choir have a reputation for colourful, enthusiastic performances that clearly demonstrate their love of singing together.

The fine guitar playing of Jim Birkett is ably complemented by bassist Paul Baxter and drummer Tom Townsend.

There’s quite a buzz in the Jazz Lounge as lots of musicians sit in with the band including some festival performers.
